About

Ian Turnbull learned his piping from his father Graeme Turnbull who was a highly regarded piper for over fifty years in the Natal area.  Ian has played for numerous events and has vast experience in playing for weddings along with dinner events in particular the traditional Scottish Burns Supper and also bringing a dignity to many funerals and memorial services with the sound of bagpipes.  His repertoire is traditional but he has also been known to improvise a particular tune for the occasion that is not traditionally played on pipes on special requests.  His love for the bagpipes and the celtic music of his forbears runs very deep with an overflow to other woodwind instruments including Irish whistles and flutes.  He has launched his own handcrafted whistle line with great success  http://impempewhistles.co.za

He is based in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands and will happily travel to most destinations in KZN and further afield.  Having grown up exploring the Drakensburg mountains of KZN as a boy scout, he has a particular fondness for playing under the shadow of these majestic mountains.

His pipes were made by the famed Peter Henderson of Scotland in the 1960's and passed on to him from his father. He proudly wears a kilt made of the Turnbull Dress tartan along with other traditional attire.
